Can AI Agents Make Open-Ended Scientific Discovery? Evidence from Station
TLDR
AI agents using Supervisor and Meta Reflection in Station rediscover 62.7% of ICLR paper findings, showing potential for autonomous open-ended scientific discovery.
Reasoning
The paper addresses an important question and provides a concrete benchmarking approach with quantifiable rediscovery rates and ablations. However, the evaluation is confined to a simulated environment and focuses on rediscovering known results, which limits evidence for truly novel open-ended discovery.

Innovations
- Supervisor mechanism and periodic Meta Reflection added to the Station environment to encourage persistent exploration when intermediate metrics are lacking
- Open-ended scientific discovery benchmark constructed from three recent ICLR oral papers, withholding results and disabling web access to measure rediscovery of original findings
- Evaluation protocol that partitions original findings into individual criteria and measures rediscovery by AI research agents
Methodology
The study uses Station, an open-world multi-agent scientific ecosystem, and creates open-ended tasks from three recent ICLR oral papers. Agents are given the main research question from each paper but not the paper's results, with web access disabled; performance is measured by how many of the original findings, partitioned into individual criteria, are rediscovered. The approach is compared with Codex Multiagent-v2 and AI Scientist-v2, with ablations and additional no-oracle tasks.
Key Results
Station rediscovered 62.7% of original finding criteria on average, compared with 15.4% for Codex Multiagent-v2 and 14.4-20.6% for AI Scientist-v2. The two new mechanisms together improved research coverage and continuity, and on two open-ended tasks without oracle papers, some agent discoveries closely matched post-cutoff researcher findings.
