PhysBrain 1.5: From Vision-Language Models to Physical Foundation Models
TLDR
PhysBrain 1.5 unifies physical understanding, action generation, and future state prediction in an 8B vision-language model, achieving strong embodied understanding benchmark results.
Reasoning
The paper presents a coherent framework that jointly models language, actions, and visual future states, with strong benchmark evidence across 28 tasks. However, action generation and future prediction are only shown qualitatively, so claims about physical interaction capabilities are less rigorously validated.

Innovations
- Unifies physical environment understanding, action generation, and future state prediction in a single learning framework.
- Encodes language responses, end-effector motion, and dense visual targets as discrete sequences for joint autoregressive next-token prediction.
- Pre-trains embodied supervision entirely from human interaction videos using task-centered episodes to pair semantic and spatial context with recovered motion and subsequent observations.
- Adapts the model via supervised fine-tuning on a mixture of human demonstrations, robot trajectories, and simulated experience.
- Produces spatially aligned RGB, depth, and robot-mask outputs for future scene prediction.
Methodology
PhysBrain 1.5 starts from a general vision-language model and encodes language responses, end-effector motion, and dense visual targets as discrete sequences, jointly optimizing them with autoregressive next-token prediction. It is pre-trained entirely on human interaction videos using task-centered episodes, then supervised fine-tuned on a mixture of human demonstrations, robot trajectories, and simulated experience. Evaluation is conducted on 28 embodied understanding benchmarks, with qualitative examples assessing action generation and future scene prediction.
Key Results
The 8B model achieves an average score of 72.5 across 28 embodied understanding benchmarks, setting a new open-source state of the art and performing on par with proprietary models such as GPT-6-Astra and Gemini 3.6 Flash; it achieves the best open-source results on 14 benchmarks. Qualitative examples show end-effector trajectory generation and future scene prediction through spatially aligned RGB, depth, and robot-mask outputs.
